Drains & Toilets
A toilet that's slow to empty, rises towards the rim, or won't flush at all usually traces back to one of three things: a blockage in the pan, a fault in the cistern, or the drain beyond it. We check in that order, on site, rather than reaching for a plunger and hoping for the best.
A toilet that keeps blocking is often catching something it shouldn't, like wet wipes or sanitary products, or the drain it feeds into is partly blocked further down. We clear the pan and trap first, then check the soil pipe and drain run until we find which one it is.
In business premises, a toilet out of action isn't just inconvenient. Staff and customers need working facilities, and a blocked toilet in a shop, office or restaurant can shut things down fast. We clear it, check the drain behind it, and get you back to normal as quickly as possible.
Sound Familiar?
A toilet that's slow to empty rarely fixes itself, and one that keeps blocking is telling you something's wrong, not being temperamental.
Don't flush again to see if it's cleared. If the water is high in the pan, another flush is how it ends up on the floor. Turn off the isolating valve on the pipe to the cistern, or the stopcock if there isn't one.
If water or waste has reached the floor, keep children and pets out of the room, wear gloves to clear up, and keep away from electrics if water is near them.
Don't use caustic drain cleaners in a blocked toilet. They can damage the pan and seals and leave a pool of chemicals for whoever clears it. Leave it alone and get us on the phone.

FAQ

That's air being pulled through the toilet's water seal, not a fault with the toilet itself. When a bath or sink drains, the water rushing down the shared waste pipe needs air behind it, and if the drain is partly blocked or the vent is restricted, it pulls that air through the nearest trap, which is usually the toilet. It's most noticeable with large volumes of water, like a bath emptying. If it happens every time and the toilet is also slow to clear, that points to a partial blockage in the soil pipe or drain, and it's worth having checked before it blocks completely.
If it isn't overflowing and you have another toilet, it can often wait, and we'll tell you honestly when you call. Don't keep flushing to see if it's cleared: a blocked toilet only fills further, and the next flush can bring it over the rim. Turn off the water to the cistern so it can't refill, use another toilet if you have one, then call us to clear it properly. If it's your only toilet, or waste is coming up somewhere else, call us tonight.
Yes. Toilets in business premises take far heavier use than at home, and a blocked or overflowing one can mean closing customer facilities or even the whole premises. We can work out of hours where that suits you, clear the blockage, and check the drain run behind it so the same problem doesn't come back next week. Where a repeat blockage is down to what's being flushed, we'll tell you, so you can put the right signs or bins in place.
Depends on where the blockage is. A blockage in the pan or its trap only affects that toilet, so everything else carries on draining as normal. A blockage further down, in the soil stack or the main drain, is different: everything feeding into it backs up, so you might see water rising in a downstairs toilet or shower when someone upstairs flushes or runs a bath. Most homes have every toilet, bath and sink feeding into the same main drain, which is why one blockage can stop more of the house than you'd expect. Stop using water upstairs if that's happening, and we'll find the blockage and clear it so the rest of the house can go back to normal.
