Drains & Toilets
A drain that backs up, gurgles or smells is telling you something is wrong further down the line. It could be fat and grease from the kitchen, wet wipes and hair caught in a bend, tree roots working into an old clay pipe, or a section of pipe that has cracked or sunk.
Stop running water down the affected sink, shower or toilet. Once we're on site we find where the blockage sits, lift the inspection chamber cover where there is one, and clear it with drain rods or a high-pressure jetter from the van.
Slow drains get the same careful check as ones that have stopped completely. Sometimes it's a simple blockage in the trap under the sink; sometimes the problem sits further back, in the main drain run or the pipework outside.
Sound Familiar?
Any one of these is worth stopping and calling. A drain that backs up once will usually back up again, and next time it might be sewage.
Stop using the blocked sink, shower or toilet, and ask everyone in the house to do the same. Water sent down a blocked drain has to go somewhere, and that's usually back up the lowest outlet.
Don't pour bleach, caustic cleaners or boiling water down a fully blocked drain. They rarely shift a proper blockage and can leave a pool of chemicals for whoever clears it. If waste water is coming up outside, keep children and pets away from it.
If dirty water is spreading across a floor, turn off the water at the stopcock so nothing refills, move valuables clear, and keep away from electrics if water is near them.

FAQ
Feel free to contact us for more information
Stop using every sink, shower, bath and toilet that drains into it, and pause any washing machine or dishwasher. If sewage is coming up inside, keep away from it and keep children and pets out of the room. Don't try to shift it with chemicals. Call us and we'll get the drain flowing again.
A slow drain is still a partial blockage, and every time fat, soap and hair pass through, a little more of it sticks. What looks like water just taking a while to go down tends to become a full blockage: the gap narrows, debris catches on it faster, and it usually gives out at the worst moment, often when the house is full. Stop pouring fats and food waste down it, and get it cleared before it blocks completely.
Each sink, bath and shower has its own trap and waste pipe before it joins the main drain. A blockage in that trap or short run, usually hair, soap or food waste, only affects that one outlet; the rest of the house carries on draining as normal. When several outlets slow down together, or the downstairs toilet bubbles as a sink empties, the problem is further along in the shared drain. We check each point in turn until we find exactly where it's stopped.
Generally, the drain pipes that serve only your property and sit within its boundary are yours to look after. Once a drain is shared with neighbours or runs beyond your boundary, it's usually the water company's responsibility. When we find the blockage, we'll tell you which side of that line it sits on, and if it turns out to be the water company's pipe, we'll tell you so you can report it to them.
